Hello,
My name is Ryan Comley, and I’ve had the incredible privilege of teaching at Střední průmyslová škola Trutnov for the past three months. I am in the Czech Republic thanks to a grant I received from the Fulbright Program. This organization—funded in large part by the Czech government—has brought me to Czechia for the full school year, where I teach English at both SPŠ Trutnov and a gymnázium in Úpice. I’m looking forward to the months ahead and to continuing to connect with students both inside and outside the classroom.
A little about me: I was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, and recently completed my master's degree in jazz studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. My research there focused on pedagogical strategies for beginning improvisers and helping students transition from reading music to creating music in their heads. When I wasn’t playing, I spent much of my time outdoors—hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park or skiing at the local slope. Here in the Czech Republic, I’ve continued exploring nature, discovering new cafés, and enjoying quiet evenings at home with my cat, Big Toni.
I’ve already loved my time in the Czech Republic, and I’m excited to continue learning about the country, its language, and its traditions. It has been a privilege not only to share what I love about home but also to hear what students and teachers love about theirs. Although I am technically the “teacher” in the classroom, I often feel like a student—there is so much to learn about Czechia, and I can’t wait to keep learning.
