Napsal(a)

Dne 23.

Visit to the Pardubice Theatre – E. A. POE ‑ A Pale Gold Ra(v)en

Apparently, it’s a tradition to write an English article about an English theatre performance, so here we go!

On 23 February, we visited the Východočeské divadlo Pardubice, where we saw the performance A Pale Gold Raven, inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe.

The performance was staged by the English Theatre company and presented an original adaptation of nine short stories by this famous American author. The audience had the opportunity to immerse themselves in a dark and mysterious world full of tension, symbolism, and powerful emotions, which are typical of Poe’s writing.

The show was especially impressive thanks to its combination of different artistic elements. In addition to acting, it included music, singing, and recitation, creating a strong atmosphere and enhancing the overall experience. The blend of spoken word and musical elements helped the audience better understand not only the plot itself but also the deeper ideas behind each story.

Our visit to the theatre was not only a cultural experience but also a valuable addition to our English and literature studies. The performance allowed us to experience English in an authentic setting while discovering classic world literature in an original and engaging way.

Students from 1.ST, 2.IT and 3.ST wrote a short review:

In our opinion, the performance was average. It was not outright bad, but neither was it particularly exceptional. Since we were seated in the balcony, some parts were difficult to understand, which partially affected the overall impression. Considering that Edgar Allan Poe is regarded as one of the founders of horror literature, we were surprised that the stories were presented more as a comedy rather than in a dark, horror-like manner.

We were a bit confused by the frequent switching between the stories. It was hard to keep track of the storyline, and since we didn’t know all of the stories, we sometimes got lost.

The very good atmosphere of the performance was enhanced by the singing and musical arrangements. Another interesting moment was the shift from drama to the recitation of the poem “The Raven,” which the actors performed with flashlights held in front of their faces.

It was definitely a valuable experience to listen to English in a different environment, good preparation for the graduation exam, and at the same time a cultural experience that we enriched with a walk around Pardubice.

I’d like to thank all the students for helping create such a nice atmosphere that day.
